East Coast Tigers Cheerleaders - free school taster session
Scalby School Gym, Wednesday 25th November, 3.30 - 4.30pm
East Coast Tigers are running a 1 hour cheerleading crash course, for any pupils who are interested. We will perform a short demonstration from this year's competition routine, explain to the pupils what cheerleading has to offer and then let them have a go at it themselves. At the end of the session we will hand out information and registration leaflets if any of the pupils wish to carry on cheerleading with us in the New Year.
East Coast Tigers not only provides a fun and enjoyable way to keep fit. Being a cheerleader can only lead to a positive attitude and can help to build leadership abilities, healthy self esteem, patience, team work, discipline and respect for themselves and for others. Most of East Coast Tigers classes are evening bases, giving young people a focus and an outlet on an evening as opposed to being out on the streets.

Year 8 Visit Paris
40 Year 8 Scalby School students visited Paris at Half Term, with teachers Sarah Pearson, John Jones, Michael McCluskie and Helen Stewart. They went to the Eiffel Tower, Sacre Coeur and Montmartre, enjoyed a boat trip on the River Seine, went shopping on the Champs Elysees and in Les Halles, had a day in Disneyland Paris and visited the Stade de France.
Head of Modern Foreign Languages, Sarah Pearson, said “It is all very well learning languages in the classroom, but the real language learning experience comes from being abroad. Therefore the aim of our trip was to encourage students at every opportunity to use the language they have learnt in the classroom in a real life context and to enhance their knowledge of French society and culture”. Student Lucy Schofield said, “It was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I would love to go there again” while student Lily Anderson said “I think the trip was amazing. The teachers were great. Thank you teachers for putting time and effort into this trip.”

Geographers out and about!
The River study students undertake is worth 25% of their final grade at GCSE. The new flexible curriculum, where students do a GCSE in a year, has led to the Geography Department changing their fieldwork from an Urban study of Scarborough's street to looking at how the characteristics of a stream change as you move down stream. The students from years 9 and 10 visited May Beck on Monday and Tuesday of this week. They collected a large amount of data which will now be written up on the computer and analysed.

AN INVITATION TO JOIN ONE OF THE HIGHEST PERFORMING
SCHOOLS IN THE COASTAL AREA
Scalby School is once again one of the most academically focussed learning
environments for children in the east coast area. The number of students gaining
5A* - C with English and Mathematics this year was the highest for all the state
schools in and around the Scarborough area, at 61%.
At the same time, the number of students gaining three or more A* or A passes
put the school in the top 25% for like schools this year, and we celebrate the
phenomenal achievement of one of our students who achieved 14 A* grades; the
highest achieving student in the Scarborough area. The number of children
gaining 5A* - C was 85%, which is 29% up on last year.
WHY GO TO SCALBY SCHOOL? WHAT ABOUT ITS FUTURE?
Scalby School would be my school of choice for my own children and I have
absolutely no doubt that the school will continue in its upward trend. Why?
Harrogate High School went through a similar process. This year 99% of students
gained 5 A*-C passes and its English and Maths 5A*-C improved by 14%, placing it
in the top 25% of schools with a similar student intake. Harrogate High remains
a member of the Outwood Grange family of schools.
Scalby School and the other 4 schools in the Outwood Grange family have
increased the English and Maths achievements of pupils by over 60%. Outwood
Grange are committed to ensuring that the hard work put in by staff, students
and governors is sustainable and to that end we have invested heavily in staff
development for all teaching and support staff.
Outwood Grange has been asked to assist in the recruitment and training of
the new Headteacher at Scalby, with a lengthy hand-over period to ensure
that the systems and processes now in place continue and the student attainment
rises year-on-year. Scalby School, its staff, students and governors have an open
invitation to remain members of the family of schools which gives it access to
innovative teaching and learning practice, personal development for students,
teacher exchange and leadership development.
In essence, when I said recently that Scalby is only just warming up, it is not said with any flippancy;
but rather a deep recognition of the substantial and sweeping changes that have been made and will continue
to deliver the highest standards in education. I have absolute confidence in the leadership team at Scalby
and the Interim Executive Board and look forward to the next phase in developing one of the most outstanding
schools in the region.
Yours sincerely,

Paul Tarn
Principal
