 It
is the purpose of every member of our learning community to make Scalby school a
centre of excellence and a catalyst for the wider community; a place that is never
satisfied with its efforts and continues to improve; a place where people have a
desire to learn, a belief in their ability to learn and the confidence to rise to
challenges.
In our learning community everybody expects as much of themselves as
they do of others. We work with, learn from and support one another. Learning, achievement
and personal growth for all are optimised because everyone shares the responsibility
for reaching these goals.
The environment in which learning takes place supports
the way people learn. Our curriculum is exciting and enjoyable. Our classrooms are
inspirational places of interaction, dialogue, exploration, creative endeavour,
reflection and opportunity for people to learn together as well as succeed independently.
Our community is a place where people are encouraged and respected. This is important
because self-esteem and a sense of belonging have a profound influence on people’s
capacity to learn.

 Our
staff prepare thoroughly for learning and teaching; they share with students the
purpose of our curriculum and enable students to identify their personal goals.
They are excellent practitioners and use the Scalby school philosophy to optimise
students’ learning and their understanding of how learning happens.
Our staff treat students as individuals. They talk with them, discussing their learning
objectives, and help them to recognise their achievements in light of these. This
is the form of reward students value most and brings true self-esteem.
Staff create an exciting and enjoyable curriculum that is tailored to provide just
the right level of challenge for each student; they exploit the potential of ICT
to enhance their teaching and provide students with the opportunity to use ICT to
support their own creativity.
Through their professionalism toward one another and students alike, our staff demonstrate
high expectations of themselves; they are committed to their own development and
actively seek to model to students the behaviour that leads to successful learning.
Consequently, students respect and share the high expectations staff have of them.
Our staff have a commitment to foster constructive relationships with students.
They demonstrate to students their respect for school protocols and they support
and challenge students to do the same at all times.
