This facility is used as a sanction for very serious misbehaviour. The room is staffed
by teachers and students are withdrawn from their normal lessons but continue with
work from that lesson in isolation from other students. It is used for serious breaches
of discipline, disruption of lessons or unsociable disruptive acts.
On occasions
the unit is used as part of an Individual Education Plan. Parents are always informed
when a student is placed in the room with an indication of the circumstances for
that placement.

This may be used as a last resort for the following:
Behaviour likely to cause serious harm to another member of the school community
(either physical, psychological or emotional)
Behaviour likely to disrupt the education of other students
Behaviour likely to undermine the authority of the staff in the school
Behaviour which shows deliberate disrespect towards the property of the school or
of other members of the school community
Behaviour which is clearly and repeatedly challenging to and at odds with the values
which the school upholds as set out in its Aims and Objectives, rules and other
policies.

If a student needs to be taken to task it is done firmly, courteously and without sarcasm. Various sanctions may be used for misbehaviour and wherever possible these are the logical consequence of the unacceptable behaviour.
For example, a student who drops litter may be placed on litter collecting duty; a student who arrives late is asked to complete work missed after school.
Detentions are set and supervised by teachers for class/work related problems. For serious offences or if students fail to attend detentions, 40-minute after-school detentions are set.
For detentions set outside of the normal school day, parents are given at least 24 hours' notice of the detention in writing.
