Scalby School is committed to the development of the individual as a caring, concerned
and contributing member of the community. We recognise that each student is unique
and valuable and is entitled to equal opportunity and continuing support in order
to reach his/her highest possible development in all areas. Central to this is an
emphasis on student effort and achievement and students are expected to reflect
on their own performance both in terms of themselves and their relationships with
others.
Positive, constructive behaviour and good effort is encouraged and rewarded
by a clearly defined system of rewards which the students themselves play a part
in developing. Good behaviour and effort is always rewarded at Scalby.
In each lesson (and extra curricular club) students gain a point if they follow the guidelines,
and meet the lesson objective given by the teacher in that lesson. These guidelines
are:
-
Arrive on time and are ready to learn
-
Listen to your teacher and your fellow
students. Remain silent when they are speaking to you
-
Respect other people’s opinions
-
Concentrate and remain focused on your own work
-
Behave sensibly. Avoid messing around
-
Come properly equipped for every lesson
-
Think before you speak. Don’t shout, or shout out
-
Do as you are asked to do, first time and every time
-
Complete today’s work
That lesson’s points are lost if the teacher is required to issue a
formal warning in the lesson. Points are awarded by marking the students’ points
card with a stamp. Points are collected weekly by the form tutor and are also entered
by each Head of House into the house competition. Students are placed in one of 4 Houses when
they arrive in school, depending upon which tutor group they are in. These are named
after famous Yorkshiremen; Alcuin (Blue), Caedmon (Green), Fairfax (Red) and Wilberforce
(Yellow). The Houses meet regularly to encourage
and support one another, as well as to celebrate individual achievement.
Heads of Year can reward students with “bonus” points which are worth 5 points. Staff can
nominate students for these awards if they are aware of any student who has:
-
Represented
the school in positive manner (working for a charity etc)
-
Been selected for county
sports teams or county music bands
-
Helped a fellow student or teacher in extraordinary
circumstances
All students are given a house badge, but are awarded an enamel badge
with the name of their house when they reach 500 points in the year.
