The course is made up of three units of work:
1 The Family
To include learning about different types of family, planning for a family, reproduction,
pre-conceptual care, pregnancy and birth.
2 Care of the child
This unit looks at the new-born baby, post-natal care of mother and baby, feeding
and nutrition, hygiene, safety and first aid, child care provision, medical needs
of children and childhood illnesses.
3 Development of the child
This unit covers the physical, intellectual, emotional and social development of
children aged 0-5 years. It also looks at the importance of play and toys in development,
and the difficulties of children with special needs.
|
These three units are assessed by an examination in Year 11, accounting for 50%
of the final grade.
Coursework: (50% of the final grade) Students have to produce
an in depth study of a child aged 0-5 years, which includes an element of research
or investigation as well as observations of the child, taking place over six months.
A great deal of commitment is needed in order to complete this study to the standard
required.
It is therefore essential that students choosing this option have access to a child
aged 0-5 years over a period of at least six months.
This is an ideal
course for learners interested in a career in child care and progression onto higher
level courses and vocational training.
