GCSE Environmental and Land-based Science

 This course has been designed as a qualification which is wholly assessed in an electronic format, ie by means of on-line examination. It provides the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding students need in the workplace, set in the context of Environmental and Land-Based Science. It is designed to motivate students by providing a style of teaching which allows students to take charge of their own learning, to develop the practical skills needed to work in land-based enterprises.

 Content Units

Unit 3 is mandatory, plus two units to be selected from the remainder:

Unit 1 - Plant Cultivation
Unit 2 - Amenity horticulture
Unit 3 - Management of the natural environment
Unit 4 - Care of animals
Unit 5 - Livestock husbandry

 Assessment

All units will be e-assessed. Three units will be externally set and marked on-line. The Skills Assessment Unit, comprising an e-portfolio, is based on the following areas:

Practical Skills: Six practical skills, two from each of the units studied.

Work-related report: A short work-related report set in the context of one of the optional units (including enterprise and business issues, career structure, training, environmental issues etc.)

Scientific investigation: Scientific, business, livestock or data collection study relating to the units studied.
