Everyday life has many questions Science can help to answer. These questions
may be about:
- who we are: for example, the history of planet Earth
- personal
choices: for example, how healthy our lifestyles are
- how we use scientific knowledge:
for example controlling air pollution.
TV, newspapers, and the Internet are full
of scientific information, but it is not always reliable. Often facts are mixed
with opinions and there are different points of view. In the Science course you
will learn about some of the most important science explanations. These can help
make sense of the world around you.
In the course it is called ‘Ideas about Science’. You will develop skills to help
you:
- weigh up evidence on both sides of an argument
- make decisions about Science
issues that affect you.
By the end of the course you should be more confident about
dealing with the Science you meet everyday.
Students following Pathways 1 and 2
will study 21st Century Science as their compulsory course with the option
of also taking a new course Environmental and Land-based Science.
Alternatively
in Pathway 2 students could also choose to study Additional Science which will run
in parallel to the compulsory course during Years 10 and 11. Students who are considering
studying any Science Course post – 16 are strongly advised to take the Additional
Science option.
Students following Pathway 3 will all study GCSE 21st Century Science
together with Additional Science, again with both courses being run in parallel
over the two years.
