 The Earth is
just a billion tonnes of Geography rolling through space!
You live in the World – why not find out more about it. Geography helps you understand
our own lives in a global world and face vital issues like climate change, the ‘war
on terror’, water supply, energy, food security and poverty reduction.
We hear everyday that the world is short of space, that people are placing greater
demands on the Earth,
but is drought caused by people or nature? What about hurricanes
or flooding? What will happen if global warming increases? Studying geography gives
us the language and skills to answer these questions confidently.
People and places are amazing! Geography is the key to understanding what makes
them so. And there is a bonus – geography is a practical subject, teaching skills
young people need across the curriculum, at home and at work. Through geography
students learn about map use, data analysis, problem solving and ICT. They find
out how to work alone and in a team. They work directly in the real world – on ‘fieldwork’.
They gain an awareness of social and environmental responsibility.
The areas you will study include:
-
human topics such as how to manage the earth’s resources or looking in-depth at
the settlements we live in;
-
physical topics like flooding, earthquakes and coasts.
Our syllabus has two tiers, which enables all students to access the grades which
match their potential. Questions are structured, with short responses, which students
find easy to complete. 25% of the final grade is based on coursework, which includes
collecting data on a fieldtrip. We also take students on a residential trip to a
field study centre in the Yorkshire Dales and plan to run a trip to Switzerland
in 2007.
Students choosing the short course option will study History and Geography for a
year each. Students will be entered for both examinations. This course has been
introduced to allow students to study both subjects, without reducing their option
choices. Short courses are no easier (or harder)
than the full GCSE, although the
amount of work covered is obviously reduced.
In Geography, three topics are studied in total, a choice being made from the list
