 Drama GCSE Edexcel
Lights

This course is an exciting mix of improvisation and scripted performance work. Any student who wishes to follow this course must discuss it with their Drama teacher. The aims of this course are to develop students’ practical and critical abilities in the field of Drama and Theatre. The improvisation work which is covered further develops the skills that students learned in previous years and also introduces new techniques. The scripted work will include reading and analysing at least one complete text.

The nature of the assessment involves students to respect, trust and rely on each other for support. Therefore it is essential that people who opt for this subject are always willing to discuss and compromise with other members of the group. Students are required to wear the correct Performing Arts kit for all lessons.

 Assessment:

 Coursework Unit 1 – 30%
Students will take part in a 6 hour workshop based on stimuli selected by the teacher. Students are expected to show their ability to incorporate various drama techniques into this workshop. The students are then required to produce a written portfolio for assessment in which students show research, development and evaluation of their work.

 Coursework Unit 2 – 30%
Students will take part in a 6 hour workshop based on a script selected by the teacher. Students are expected to show their ability to analyse the script and show understanding of themes and intentions given by the playwright. They are to incorporate various drama techniques into this workshop. The students are then required to produce a written portfolio for assessment in which students show research, development of this workshop and an evaluation of a piece of theatre they have seen.

 Performance Examination – 40%
Students will prepare a piece of improvisation, which will be performed for an external examiner near the end of the course. This performance should demonstrate the students’ understanding of techniques and concepts experienced throughout the course.

 Theatre Visits
Theatre visits will be arranged during the course to enhance the knowledge and appreciation of performance and stage craft elements and to prepare the students for the portfolio in Unit 2. It must be stressed that these visits are COMPULSORY so every student must attend them.
