Tasks to complete-
1) Research and test yourself on the words linking to how we describe the properties (what they are like) of the materials we use to design and make products. You should be finding the meanings for these words – Strength, elasticity, plasticity, ductility, tensile strength, malleability, toughness, hardness, conductivity, absorbency, density and fusibility.
2) Find examples of types of materials for the following material categories – timber, polymers (plastics), metals, smart materials, modern materials, composite materials. An example would be that you can have ferrous metals that contain iron and non ferrous metals that do not contain iron. Types of ferrous metals include steel and iron. This will help you learn about the different materials you can select to design and make products and what they are like for their properties.
Find the materials – woods, metals and plastics section in the list of topics. Complete the smart learning sheets for these by opening the link. When you open the pdf document for the smart learning sheet, if you click the answers link on the top left corner (next to the image of the mobile phone) it will take you directly to the page with the answers on.
