Key Stage 3

Year 7

We aim to give students  a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. Through a combination of in depth and overview studies we use a range of enquiry questions to investigate the development of Church, state and society in Britain 1066-1745.

 Year 8

In Year 8 we continue the theme of using overview and in depth enquires to investigate  ideas, political power, industry and Empire 1745-1901 including a local study of the impact on Scarborough.  We conclude with a study of the challenges facing Britain , Europe and the wider world 1901 – to the present day.

Key Stage 4

The History Department offers the AQA GCSE course – The Modern World which provides students with the opportunity to study 20th century history in both breadth and depth. The first unit focuses on international relations 1929 – 1939.  Key topics include the legacy of the First World War and Hitler’s foreign policy.  Studying Germany 1918-1945 gives students the opportunity to examine in detail Hitler’s astounding rise to power, the Nazi police state and the experience of ordinary people in Nazi Germany both in peacetime and during the Second World War. International relations 1945-1980 is  an investigation into the key events of the Cold War including the Berlin blockade,    Hungary 1956, the building of the Berlin Wall,   the Cuban missile crisis of 1962 and the continuation of the arms and space race.  We conclude this period with a study of the USSR invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 and the USA boycott of the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Finally, for the examination, students will study America’s involvement in the Vietnam War. Controlled  Assessment worth 25% of the final grade is based on two historical enquiry questions investigating Britain’s role in the First and Second World War.
