Scalby School was judged to be effective in the Ofsted Inspection of September 2000,
but we recognise the need to continue to develop and to strive for higher standards.
We have the ambition to become a school at the forefront of developments in teaching
and learning and we see becoming a Technology College as pivotal in sharing our
expertise with the local community.
We want our students to become ambitious, responsible, independent learners who
are confident in the uses of modern technology. We want to counter the prevailing
culture among our students characterised by pragmatism and limited aspirations.
In particular, we want the opportunity to provide much greater access to ICT in
all subjects and significantly to raise students’ attainment and motivation through
its application.
While standards of attainment at KS4 in general, and in Design & Technology
and Science in particular, are good in comparison with national norms, we want to
raise expectations and attainment in all subjects, especially in Mathematics and
ICT. We want to make imaginative use of the National KS3 Strategy to improve progression
from KS2 and to explore more varied and innovative teaching and learning strategies,
especially employing the potential of ICT.
We want to extend the work currently being done in school in monitoring and target
setting by enabling all staff to make active use of data stored in the administrative
ICT system, referencing and analysing the information in order to shape strategies
for teaching and learning and intervention.
We want to create space for our staff to develop their skills and to explore new
ways of teaching effectively, especially through the use of modern technologies.
We want to support our feeder Primary Schools, to learn from them and to share developments
with them. In particular, we wish to provide imaginative opportunities for students
from the small rural schools in our catchment. We want to work more closely with
our partner secondary school and Special school to develop and share good practice.
We also want to extend existing links with the Tertiary Colleges in Scarborough
and to increase the uptake of subjects linked with Design & Technology, Mathematics
and Science by students across the ability range. We want more of our students to
look positively at career opportunities in those subjects. We want to stimulate
more opportunities for our staff to share in developments with colleagues in schools
and colleges attended by our students and to ensure effective progression.
We wish to extend and develop the existing work within the local community managed
by the school’s Community Tutor, especially with target groups of young people and
adults who are disadvantaged or “at risk”. We want to offer more opportunities for
the adult population to develop skills in ICT in order to enhance their employment
prospects and to explore ways of linking more effectively with local businesses.
Over all, we want to be seen as a learning institution which values people and seeks
to develop the latent talents in each one. We want to serve our community by promoting
the search for innovative ways of unlocking its unfulfilled potential.
