 We
live in a rapidly changing world in which Science and Technology have a major influence
on all our lives. All today's students need to experience Science in as wide a range
of contexts as possible if they are to appreciate its relevance and develop the
knowledge and skills they will need during their working lives.
This need has been recognised with the inclusion of Science as a core subject in
the National Curriculum, which places particular emphasis on the importance of providing
Science courses which are relevant and give a balance between the different areas
of the subject. At the same time students will be expected to develop the intellectual
and practical skills which will enable them to plan and carry out investigations,
interpret results and communicate their findings.
The curriculum also ensures that Science Education is broadened to include the role
of Science in Society as well as the consideration of economic and environmental
issues. Today's students should have a wider appreciation of scientific issues which
will enable them to make informed decisions throughout their lives.
