 Drama at Scalby
School is flourishing. Since 2001, students in Year 7 and Year 8 receive one lesson
of Drama per week and Year 9 students receive one lesson per fortnight in order
to develop their skills. A vast number of students will agree that Drama is their
favourite subject at Scalby and this is fantastic to hear. Drama is in the curriculum at Scalby in order for the students to develop many important personal skills and
qualities. Most importantly, students are expected to demonstrate
respect for others and develop social/teamwork skills. The subject also increases
the confidence of all students, a quality essential for later life.
Performance is extremely important to us at Scalby. At the end of Year 7 all students perform in the annual Year Seven Drama Festival.
This exciting opportunity enables students to perform for a live audience and the
festival has been extremely well received by students, parents and staff in the
past. It also means that 99% of our
students have at some point demonstrated their confidence and teamwork skills to
a full audience. Money raised by these shows has helped to vastly improve facilities
for the school community to use in their lessons. The drama room is now equipped
with a lighting rig, surround sound music system, video editing facilities, hard
disk camcorder, video projector and much more.
GCSE Drama is another example of our success. Results are always good and often some of the best in the school. In 2004 40% of our students received A grades and
last year 33% received the same! As a result of its increased popularity, there are now two drama groups in Year 10 and two in Year 11. Students are encouraged
to push themselves continually and every year we see fantastic pieces of performance
as part of the GCSE examination.
School productions are put together every year by the performing arts team and Scalby
is now well known for the high standard of performances throughout the local community.
Productions over the last year have included; “Bernard and the Genie”, “Dream On”,
“Little Shop of Horrors”, “Our Day Out”, “Bugsy Malone” and in 2007 “W e Will Rock
You”. “We Will Rock You” was performed to full houses at the famous Stephen Joseph
Theatre in the town centre and received standing ovations every night! We were so
proud to hear so many people say the show was “not just a school production, but
just as good as any professional show”! The opportunity to perform in such a fantastic
venue was very well received by our students and we plan on returning to the theatre
for our next production of “HONK” which will take place on 28th, 29th Feb and 1st
March 2008.
Drama at Scalby is now looking towards new initiatives for the future of the department.
A Year 9 drama club for student who have shown great promise in years 7 and 8 is
now running in which students are being taught at a higher level. New links with
primary schools are being formed with the aim of inviting younger students to take
part in our productions and staff and students from Scalby will be visiting these
primary schools to provide them with drama workshops and to encourage them to increase
their own levels of confidence.
If you are the kind of person who likes the stage and wants the opportunity to excel
in this area, then Scalby School is the place for you. For further information on
the department feel free to contact Mr Taylor (Head of Drama) at the school.
