Scalby School have developed a new way of rewarding their students. The scheme is called Scalby Stars. Headteacher David Read said, “The idea for Scalby Stars came from the annual Scarborough Stars initiative. It aims to recognise the achievements of our young people outside the classroom, for non-academic reasons. What was powerful about it in my view though, was that it was based on the nominations of students and we received large numbers of nominations. These awards therefore reflect the high esteem the winners are held in by their peers.” The ideas for the awards scheme was championed by the school’s Junior Leadership Team, who worked together to develop the categories for nominations.
The awards event was held in the LRC at the school. It was a chance for parents to go into school and celebrate the achievements of their children and talk to some of the students who had nominated them.
The award categories and the winning students were:
Courage over adversity: Josh Pickin
Care for others: Jordan Marshall
Volunteer: Kitty Jackson
Charity fund raiser: Gemma Way
Contribution to Performing Arts: Jamie Coles
Contribution to school sports (male): Dylan Muggeson-Forbes
Contribution to school sports (female): Trudy Corcoran.
